Adorno and Horkheimer; The Culture Industry

Adorno and Horkheimer

Adorno and Horkheimer tend to have a pessimistic view of the cultural elitist. They reckon that the creative in music, srt and literature are co-opted ans corrupted by industrial capitalism through there production methods.
From this lesson i learnt about the Adorno and Horkheimer's theory about the industry and how it is like a machine, manufacturing goods, producing what they think people want.
In this lesson we related the Adorno and Horkheimer's theory to the music industry and X-factor and how X-Factor is a capitalist institution who seek to control/maintain the status quo saying that the X-Factor is a place where they turn and take real unique talent and changing it into something in which they think the audience will like.
Adorno and Horkheimer's theory describes artists as commodities, where as major co-operations such as the X Factor see artists as assets, people that can be used to bring in profits.
Adorno and Horkheimer also believe that co-operations such as this dont just control the artist but control the audience, feeding us to like what we think is normal and to reject anything different or new, thus changing our thinking mentality affecting how we see and view what they show us.
